Howdy Shadowverse Players!
The goal of these articles is to give you guys insight into the mindsets of the competitive players; to understand their success, and make it your own. This time, I want to talk a lot about developing game sense and how it can help you win a lot more games!
Aya Senpai! What is game sense?
Good question random internet reader! Game sense is sort of like developing an internal alarm. It gives you a better understanding of deductive reasoning and predictive skills. Game sense is what people use in order to maneuver around their opponents plays in a manner of speaking. I will go over a few things below that will help improve your game sense!
- Learn the most commonly used cards played in the deck that you will be facing against.
Learning the cards that people are gonna be playing is a surefire way to become a better player. Knowing the most common cards will allow you to predict when that card will be played so you can either play around it or have a counter-directed toward that strategy.
- Take notes about why you are losing!
This is a very critical step in the learning process when developing game sense. If you are losing a lot to a specific tactic, look at your notes and see why you are losing to it. If you took detailed notes during your game, you will be able to break down exactly why you lost and it can help you in the long run!
Back when I used to play competitive card games, I used to walk around with a composition book (yup those black and white books from school) and I took notes of every game that I played. That helped me so much I could always go back and see why I won or lost a specific game. Taking notes on games you lose is paramount to understanding what you need to be doing in matchups.
- Take notes while you are playing your matches!
But Aya! Isn’t this the same as the second point? Nope! It isn’t. You want to be taking notes about everything! The below list is some of the things you can take notes on during a game that can help you out!
- How many of a card your opponent played.
- How many cards are in your opponent’s hand.
- How many cards are placed into your/your opponent’s deck (portalcraft)
- How many spells your opponent has played if they are playing spellboost runecraft.
- Play in tournaments!
Nothing will help you more with developing game sense than playing in a tournament. In tournaments, each of your matches means a lot more so you tend to take them more seriously. In a way, by playing in tournaments, you are becoming more exposed to other players who are either trying to accomplish the same things you are or already have and are seeking to improve even further. Even if it is outside of your comfort zone, you should still play in tournaments if you’re able.
You can even talk to players from that tournament afterward to understand why they did or didn’t do certain things. That can give you an insight into their decision making and better understanding to help inform your decisions as well.
Developing game sense is usually done by playing anyway. But, it can truly be honed by focusing on certain aspects of the game and breaking them down. When looking to become a more competitive player, you want to make sure you are aware of the situations you are being placed in. I was once told the following statement and it was absolutely true: “The best way to deal with a situation is to never be placed in it in the first place” That statement couldn’t be truer in regards to everything in life! Until next time!
