Howdy Shadowverse Players!
Last time, we talked a bit about how thinking ahead in your matches can give you a critical edge in competitive play. While it is important for players to think ahead, it is also important for players to learn to think in different ways. This time, we are gonna talk about how you can expand your knowledge base to help with your preparations for bigger events!
Play multiple formats!
Okay so this one may be a given because the competitive circuit for Shadowverse contains all 3 current formats; Unlimited, Take 2 and Rotation. However, I have seen some players just kinda skate by with minimal knowledge of Unlimited and Take 2 format since the majority of competitive Shadowverse is Rotation format. To truly take your game to the next level, you should learn to familiarize yourself with each of those formats and in-depth!
Take 2 is a prime example of an underplayed format with very limited knowledge spread out about it. But, playing in that format can teach you about situations that you may not have even thought of! Just last week Hishiro taught me something completely new with his sword lethal against Crumsion. That was definitely something to watch because as I was looking at the game, I was like “Crum is gonna win”. Then BOOM! Out of nowhere, Crumsion loses the game to an insane lethal that a good majority of us missed. It was a pretty sweet watch and definitely was worth looking at!
In essence, looking into other formats can literally change your perception of how certain cards work and can create some very incredible interactions.
Watch Tournament Footage / Streams
One of the best things you can do as an aspiring competitive player is to look at tournament VODs. Why? Because you get a direct look into the mind and decisions of your potential opponents! You get to see their decisions and their lines of play that have allowed them to make it to the streaming portion of the event. This is an unbelievably valuable resource to players because you might look at a line of play someone makes and go “Why in the world would they do that?!” and then they turn around and win the match; or the alternative, they lose the match because they were thinking something was gonna happen that didn’t. Either way, watching footage is an incredible way to level up your thinking!
Also, during those streams, you can also learn from the players watching as well if it is a live stream. People in chats often talk about the plays taking place so you can use them to help you as well.
Not all improvement comes from the same source. so it is important to look outside of yourself and your comfort zones. If you are new to competition, know that everyone goes through the same growing pains. Just know you aren’t alone out there and should you need help, there are always people willing to do so, myself included! Until next time!
